Chamaecyparis obtusa ‘Fontana’

Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Fontana' is a broadly upright, tree form of Hinoki cypress with horizontal main branching, and nodding, fan-like branch tips. Foliage is glossy and dark green in color. After 10 years of growth, a mature specimen will measure 8 to 10 feet (2 - 3 m) tall and two-thirds as wide, an annual growth rate of 9 to 12 inches (25 - 30 cm).

This cultivar originated as a branch mutation found in 1970 on a specimen of C. obtusa 'Nana Gracilis' by C. Verboom, Boskoop, The Netherlands. H. J. van de Laar Nursery introduced it to the nursery trade in 1971.
