Tsuga chinensisvar. forrestii, first described in 1990 by (Downie) John Silba (born 1961), is known as 丽江铁杉 (li jiang tie shan) in the Chinese language. It is treated as a separate species, namely Tsuga forrestii, by some authorities.
T. c. var. forrestii differs from the typical variety in the following ways:
Distribution. This variety is native to China — northeatern Guizhou (Jiangkou: Fanjing Shan), southwestern Sichuan, and northwestern Yunnan provinces, growing at elevations of 6,500 to 9,600 feet (2,000 - 3,000 m) above sea level in mountains, valleys, and mixed forests.
