Tsuga canadensis 'Stewart's Gem' / Canadian Hemlock

Tsuga canadensis 'Stewart's Gem' is a dwarf selection of Canadian hemlock that grows with a tight, wide globose structure with extremely short, dark-green foliage and cinnamon-colored foliar buds. After 10 years of growth, a mature specimen will measure 36 inches (90 cm) tall and wide, an annual growth rate of 3 to 4 inches (7.5 - 10 cm).

This cultivar was found in the wild in 1936 near Quinebaugh, Vermont, USA; and introduced to the nursery trade by Stewart's Nursery of Wakefield, Rhode Island. This conifer is also known as T. canadensis 'Rhode Island.'
