Sciadopitys verticillata ‘Perlenglanz’

Sciadopitys verticillata 'Perlenglanz' is an upright, bushy variegated selection of Japanese Umbrella pine with new growth appearing apically or entirely pearly-white, depending on light exposure, before hardening off to typical green later in the season. The overall effect in the landscape in quite stunning. Rate of growth in most areas is 6 inches (15 cm) per year resulting in a dense conical dwarf, 5 feet (1.5 m) tall and 2.5 feet (70 cm) wide after 10 years in the garden.

Kurt Wittbold-Müsller nursery, Verden, Niedersachsen, Germany is credited with the origin and introduction of this cultivar. It came about as a seedling selected at the nursery in the late 1990s. Translated into English, 'Perlenglanz' roughly means "pearly gloss" in the German language.
