Pinus thunbergii 'Banshosho' / Banshosho Japanese Black Pine
[Greer Gardens] Very unique, this form is of Japanese origin. Compact and dense, branches are upright with thin needles and a bottle-brush appearance to the branches. [World Checklist of Conifers] A dense, globose plant with dark green foliage and multiple buds. Foliage much lighter when grafted on P. sylvestris. In early summer new growth resembles pipes in appearance. Often used for bonsai.

Same specimen as above photographed in September 2 years later. Branches that grew at a higher rate have been pruned out to give a more uniform appearance.
