Pinus resinosa 'Watnong' / Watnong Red pine

Pinus resinosa 'Watnong' is a slow-growing, globose selection of Red pine with somewhat lighter green foliage than is typical of the species. Rate of growth in most areas in 2 to 4 inches (5 - 10 cm) per year resulting in a regular globe, 2 to 3 feet (60 - 100cm) tall and wide after 10 years in the garden. Like all cultivars of this species, 'Watnong' is extremely hardy and is a perfect selection for cold northern climates.

This cultivar originated as a witch's broom found by a customer of Don Smith of Watnong nursery, Morris Plains, New Jersey. The original broom was found in the town of Short Hill, New Jersey. It is sometimes seen listed along with the provisional name, [Witch's Broom no. 15].
