Pinus resinosa'Don Smith' is a flat-topped globose dwarf cultivar of Red pine. With maturity and beyond, specimens will take on more of a spreading, carpeting growth habit and have the potential to become quite large over time. Its straight, gray-green foliage tends to be a bit softer than what is typical of the species. Annual rate of growth is 2 to 3 inches (5 - 7.5 cm), resulting in a mature plant measuring 2.5 feet (40 cm) tall and 4 feet (60 cm) wide after 10 years in the garden.
This cultivar originated as a witch's broom found in the early 1960s by J. Leonard Baily in Mendham New Jersey, USA and introduced the the nursery trade by Don and Hazel Smith, Watnong Nursery, New Jersey, USA.
