Conifer Database - Mr Wood

Conifer Trees Database

Welcome to the American Conifer Society Database

Established in 1983, our mission is centered on advocating for the integration of conifer trees in garden designs and landscapes. We are dedicated to educating enthusiasts and the general public about the proper care, cultivation, and conservation of these majestic and diverse evergreens.

Pinus mugo ‘Mr Wood’

Pinus mugo 'Mr Wood' is a curious, irregularly globose selection of mugo pine with stubby symmetrical branching and short, delicate, Blue green needles that often grow with a hooked tip. After 10 years of growth, a mature specimen will measure 12 inches (30 cm) tall and wide, an annual growth rate of around 1 inch (2.5 cm).

This cultivar originated as a seedling selected in the late 1990s by Edsal Wood of Bonsai Village Nursery, Aurora Oregon. He gifted the original plant to Talon Buchholz, proprietor of Buchholz & Buchholz Nursery, Gaston Oregon, who named it when he started distributing cutting material. Talon has thoroughly detailed this history of this plant in his Flora Wonder Blog. Interestingly, Edsal Wood also selected a second, nearly identical seedling that he gifted to Larry Stanley of Stanley & Sons nursery, Boring Oregon. Larry named this second plant 'Fishhook.' Although many conifer enthusiasts insist that the plants are one in the same, both Talon and Larry insist that they received plants from Edsal, not cuttings; and that neither nurseryman was aware of the other plants' existence until many years after Edsal Woods' passing.

This conifer will always be nearly impossible to find in the nursery trade. It is very difficult to propagate and young plants are always extremely weak and need special care if planted in the garden. If one is lucky enough to acquire a plant, we recommend growing it in a pot for many years to allow for it to gain strength.
