Pinus mugo 'Aries' / Aries mugo pine

Pinus mugo subsp. rotundata 'Aries' is a dwarf, flattened bun-form of Mountain pine with shorter, gray-green needles, 0.6 - 0.8 inches (1.5 - 2 cm) long. After 10 years of growth, a mature specimen will only measure 12 inches (30 cm) tall and 16 inches (40 cm) wide, a growth rate of slightly more than 1 inch (2.5 cm) per year.

This cultivar originated as a witch's broom found in the Czech Republic long ago. It is unknown who the finder was. It is listed as #14 in the San Sebastian series of Mountain pines, a collection of 1000s of broom selections made by scores of Eastern European conifer professionals and hobbyists.

Pinus mugo 'Aries' SS #14 WB growing in northwestern Pennsylvania, USDA Zone 5b. Grows 1.5 - 2.5 inches per year, about as tall as wide. It is looser than some globe pines, allowing good air circulation.
