Conifer Trees Database

Welcome to the American Conifer Society Database

Established in 1983, our mission is centered on advocating for the integration of conifer trees in garden designs and landscapes. We are dedicated to educating enthusiasts and the general public about the proper care, cultivation, and conservation of these majestic and diverse evergreens.

Picea orientalis ‘Ferny Creek Prostrate’

Picea orientalis 'Ferny Creek Prostrate' as the name suggests, is a completely prostrate (spreading, flat-growing) selection of Caucasian spruce with layered branching and short, shiny, very dark-green needles. After 10 years of growth, a mature specimen will measure 12 inches (30 cm) tall and 3 feet (90 cm) wide, an annual growth rate of 3 to 4 inches (7.5 - 10 cm), significantly more outward than up.

This cultivar originated in the 1990s in Australia. A town and nursery exists in Victoria, both called Ferny Creek. Once can speculate that either or both could be the origination place of this conifer. 'Ferny Creek Prostrate' is one of seven selections made in 2019 for the popular ACS Collectors' Conifer of the Year Program.
