Welcome to the American Conifer Society Database

Established in 1983, our mission is centered on advocating for the integration of conifer trees in garden designs and landscapes. We are dedicated to educating enthusiasts and the general public about the proper care, cultivation, and conservation of these majestic and diverse evergreens.

Picea glauca ‘Spring Surprise’

Picea glauca 'Spring Surprise' is a special miniature selection of Alberta spruce. Since it is very new to the nursery trade, it is unclear what its mature form will be. The young plants that one will occasionally see appear to be very dwarf and globose. The needles are tiny and in the juvenile form which is typical of all cultivars descended from Picea glauca 'Conica.' The first flush of spring growth is same bright white as it's parent tree, Picea glauca 'J.W. Daisy's White.'

This cultivar was found as a witch's broom on a specimen of Picea glauca 'J.W. Daisy's White' in The Netherlands sometime around 2005. It's best use is in the rock garden or alpine trough complementing other miniature conifers.
