Picea abies ‘Merkii’

Picea abies

Picea abies 'Merkii' is an old selection of Norway spruce with dwarf, compact, irregular pyramidal form that often forms multiple leaders and short horizontal branches holding dark green foliage. After 10 years of growth a mature specimen will measure 30 inches (75 cm) tall and 20 inches (50 cm) wide, an annual growth rate of 2 to 3 inches (5 - 7.5 cm).

This cultivar has been present in the nursery trade since the late 1800s and was first described by German dendrologist/horticulturalist, Ludwig Beissner in Handbuch der Coniferen-Benennung.
