Picea abies ‘Malena’

Picea abies

Picea abies 'Malena' is a diminutive, symmetrically globose selection of Norway spruce with stubby branches holding short, thick needles. After 10 years of growth, a mature specimen will measure 18 inches (45 cm) tall and wide, an annual growth rate of 1.5 inches (4.5 cm). In contrast with other miniature Norway spruce, 'Malena' stands up well to strong, hot sun, looking great where other cultivars suffer from scorch.

This cultivar originated as a witch's broom found, named and introduced in the mid 1980s by Hauenstein AG, Baar, Switzerland.
