Larix kaempferi 'Wolterdingen' / Wolterdingen Japanese larch

Larix kaempferi 'Wolterdingen' is an irregular, flattened globose dwarf selection of Japanese larch with layered branching and soft Blue-green foliage that turns butter-yellow before being shed in fall. After 10 years of growth, a mature specimen will measure 20 inches (50 cm) tall and 16 inches (40 cm) wide, an average annual growth rate of 2 inches (5 cm).

This cultivar originated as a witch's broom found in 1970 by Günter Horstmann of Schneverdingen, Germany in the town of Wolterdingen in the southwestern part of the country. He later introduced it to the nursery trade through his family's namesake nursery. One often sees the cultivar name, L. kaempferi 'Schneverdingen' in nursery catalogs and literature. It is believed that the two cultivars are one in the same based on their similar appearance and the fact the 'Wolterdingen' originated at a nursery in the town of Schneverdingen.
