Dacrydium ericoides / Bintulu

Dacrydium ericoides, first described by David de Laubenfels in 1988 is commonly known as Sempilor or Bintulu.

Description. Dacrydium ericoides is an evergreen coniferous tree in the podocarpaceae family, growing 30 - 60 feet (10 - 17 m) tall, with a 10 to 12 inch (25-30 cm) diameter, with drooping twigs. Foliage is linear, straight, spread out more or less perpendicular to the shoot except on new growth, narrowing abruptly at the apex to an spiny tip, flat on the upper surface but becoming slightly concave towards the apex, stomata on the upper surface in two bands separated over the mid-vein, sharply keeled on the lower surface, 0.2 to 0.4 inch (5-10 mm) long. Fertile structures usually lateral, subtended by a cluster of reduced leaves which are 0.10 inch (2-3 mm) long. Pollen cones are 0.25 to 0.4 inch (7-10 mm) long and (2-2.5 mm) in diameter. At the apex of the microsporophyll is a lanceolate spur ca. 0.04 inch (1 mm) long and 0.03 inch (0.7 mm) wide. Seed bracts are 0.14 inch (3-4 mm) long with sometimes two fertile seeds within.

Distribution. This species is native only to Borneo — Sarawak, known from Mt Dulit and the Merurong Plateau in northern Sarawak. It's locally common in primary forest on exposed mossy ridges at elevations between 3,000 to 4,500 feet (1000 to 1500 m).
