Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Elf' / Elf Hinoki cypress

Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Elf' is a compact, miniature selection of Hinoki cypress with dark-green foliage. It performs best in full sun, but is also a good choice for gardens in partial shade. After 10 years of growth, a mature specimen on measure only 6 to 8 inches (15 - 20 cm) tall and wide, an annual rate of growth of less than 1 inch (2.5 cm).

This cultivar originated as one of many seedlings selected in 1966 by Joel W. Spingarn of Baldwin, Long Island, New York. The source of Spingarn's seed was mutual Long Islander, Henry Weissenberger.
