Welcome to the American Conifer Society Database

Chamaecyparis lawsoniana ‘Columnaris’

Chamaecyparis lawsoniana 'Columnaris' is a fast-growing, very narrow, upright selection of Lawson cypress with dense, fastigiate branching, and attractive, steely blue-gray foliage. After 10 years of growth, a mature specimen will measure 10 - 15 feet (3 - 5 m) tall and 40 inches (100 cm) wide, an annual growth rate of 12 to 18 inches (30 - 45 cm). It is a good choice for screening (like in arborvitae), or a solitary statement in a large landscape.

This cultivar originated as seedling selected around 1940 by Jan Spek Nursery, Boskoop, The Netherlands. It is also seen listed in the trade as 'Columnaris Glauca'.
