Abies koreana 'Wellenseind' is a very congested, dwarf, mounding selection of Korean fir. It is distinguishable through short dark green needles and conspicuously white winter buds. Typical rate of growth is around 1 inch (2.5 cm) a year, resulting in a 12-inch (30 cm) ball after 10 years in the landscape.
This relatively new plant in the trade originated as a witch's broom, found in 2001 by Mr. Dick van Hoey-Smith on the Wellenseind property of Mr. Zeeman in Lage Mierde in the south of The Netherlands. The broom was about eye level and close to the trunk of a 20 feet (6 m) tall Abies koreana. It'™s a little compact ball of 8 to 10 inches (20 - 25 cm) in diameter with remarkable fresh, dark green needles. Mr. van Hoey-Smith took some scions of the original broom, which is still on the tree, and brought those scions to nurseryman Mr. Nelis Kools in Deurne. He successfully propagated some plants in January 2002, so we will watch its progress over the next several years. It looks promising as a novelty.
