Abies hickelii var. oaxacana, first described by (Martinez) Farjon and Silba in 1990 is commonly known as Oaxacan fir.
This variety of Hickel's fir differs from the typical species by having glabrous branches, broader, often notched needles and larger seed cones 3.6 to 4.8 inches (9 - 12 cm) long by 2 inches (5 cm) broad with hidden bracts. (The seed cones of the type are 2.4 to 3.2 inches (6 - 8 mm) long by 1 to 1.4 inches (2.5 - 3.5 cm) broad).
Distribtuion. This specific variety is found in Mexico - states of Guerrero and Oaxaca. It has not been described from Chiapas, another distinction from var. hickelii.
