Abies delavayi var. motuoensis, first described by W.C. Cheng and L.K. Fu in 1975, differs from the type in having paler, densely ferruginous pubescent young shoots and longer (?) leaves 0.8 - 1.35 inches (2-3.2 cm) in length that are less densely arranged. It has been found in SE Xizang province (Tibet) at elevations of 10,000 to 12,000 feet (3000-3800 m) (Farjon 1990).
