Welcome to the American Conifer Society Database

Established in 1983, our mission is centered on advocating for the integration of conifer trees in garden designs and landscapes. We are dedicated to educating enthusiasts and the general public about the proper care, cultivation, and conservation of these majestic and diverse evergreens.

Abies balsamea ‘Tyler Blue’

Abies balsamea 'Tyler Blue' is a compact, pyramidal tree form of Balsam fir with short, distinctively bright-blue needles foliage. After 10 years of growth, a mature specimen will measure 4 feet (1.3 m) tall and 24 inches (60 cm) wide, an annual growth rate of 4 to 6 inches (10 - 15 cm).

George Tyler of New Hampshire had a very blue seedling of Balsam fir show up in his Christmas tree plantation which he had marked "not for sale". He allowed Greg Williams of Kate Brook Nursery in Vermont to propagate scions from the tree. Later he found that one of his customers had cut the tree and hauled it away.

This Balsam fir is typical of the species in being a conical tree, but unique with its blue foliage. [ Don Howse, Porterhowse Farms Nursery ]
