Free Grafting Demonstration by Peter Jones
Walter Reed Community Center - Arlington, VA
On Sunday, March 4, from 1:30 pm to 3:30, Peter Jones will do a FREE grafting demonstration at the Walter Reed Community Center at 2909 South 16th street in Arlington, Virginia 22204. If you are interested in learning how to propagate rare and choice plants by grafting, you are welcome to attend. Pete describes the workshop:
Grafting is a surgical procedure used to reproduce rare and choice plants that don’t reproduce readily from seed or cutting. Plants with unique characteristics, such as dwarf stature or different foliage, are propagated by grafting to ensure that the outstanding qualities of the plant are preserved. Like most surgical procedures, there are guidelines and specificity steps that one must learn if one wishes to have success.
Being self taught, it took me many years of trial and error before I understood what one must do and how one must care for the plants after grafting is done. I wish to share what I have learned and hopefully, encourage others to develop their grafting skills. I don’t know how much longer I will be able to show how grafting is done, but I can assure you it is a most rewarding skill.
Rootstock and compatibility must be understood along with the grafting procedures. Healthy rootstock and scion wood free of fungus is one of the first steps. There are many methods of grafting to produce results that we wish to have. Over the years, I have searched for knowledge about grafting and outstanding plants to grow and train as bonsai. To this end, there were many disappointments but thanks to Dave Dambovic, Bill Merritt, Jules Koetsch and Bill Daley for their encouragement, I now have some nice pines to graft so others younger bonsai people can grow very nice pines.
If you are interested in seeing this demonstration please let Peter know (firstname.lastname@example.org), so we can get an idea of how many people are coming. If there is enough interest, maybe next year we can put together a hands-on grafting workshop so you can practice what you learn.
