Glenn Herold, retired Horticulture Professor from Illinois Central College, will be the conference keynote speaker on Friday night.   He will speak on Conifer Survival in a Flowering Plant World, discussing adaptations that allow conifers to survive in a variety of harsh conditions.

The Gardens at Epic Systems

The emphasis of this year’s conference will be the ability to visit many local gardens, both public and private.   On Saturday we’ll tour two fabulous spots: the Longenecker Horticultural Gardens (ACS Reference Garden) at the UW – Madison Arboretum and the gardens at Epic System’s Campus. Long-time curator Dr. Hasselkus, Dr. Laura Jull, and the current curator, David Stevens, will be available to lead tours of the Longenecker, and Jeff Epping of Epping Design and Consulting, a key designer of the Epic System’s gardens, will lead a tour of that unique site. This is an opportunity not available to the general public.

A Private Garden Cared for by Linda Brazill

The Saturday bus tour will also visit gardens cared for by Linda Brazill and Mark Golbach, and Linda and Bruce Christensen.   Both are stunning examples of what private gardeners can do with limited urban space.

Before the conference starts on Friday and after its end on Sunday, seven more Madison gardens will be available for you to visit on your own.  Olbrich Botanical Gardens on Madison’s east side and Allen Centennial Gardens on the University of Wisconsin campus are wonderful public gardens. Five private gardens will also be open to registered attendees.  Two of them are on the east side of town located near Olbrich.  The other three are on the west side of Madison within 15 minutes of the conference site.   A listing, with descriptions and photos, will be available to everyone registered for the conference.

The Radisson is offering a group rate of $109 plus tax per night.   This rate is available to attendees for the extended weekend: July 18 through July 22. Reservations can be made at 608-833-0100 or on their website.  When using the website, select your check in/out dates, click on “search options”, select “promotional code”, enter “AMCOSO” and select “search”. The group rate is available until June 27, 2018
