Which is the bluest parviflora – 'Blauer Engel' or 'Cleary'? (6 Replies)

Descriptions of these two cultivars (Pinus parviflora ‘Blauer Engel’ and ‘Cleary’) say that each is “the bluest selection of the species”.

I am considering adding one or both to my collection, though I’ve never seen either in person. Can anyone advise as to how these plants differ? Is the coloration different, or are there other noteworthy differences between the two? Which one stikes you as a better plant overall?

can’t speak to either one, but hell, buy them both! what sizes are available to you? mail order or local stuff? I’m guessing you already googled them both? hope you find what you’re looking for, sorry this post is of no actual help 🙂

Alex I don’t know ‘Blauer Engel’ but I have a ‘Cleary’ that is very lovely. I don’t think of it as blue so much as blue-green (compared to say the blue of some Cedrus or a Picea pungens). I will tell you though that ‘Clearly has extremely showy cones. See my photo attached (as always thanks to Jan LeCocq for the image!)

Alex, ‘Blauer Engel’ (often Blue Angel here) is considerably bluer than ‘Cleary.’ It is definitely the bluest of the parvifloras I own and have seen.

Between Sara’s picture and Neil’s description, I think I should like to grow both of these plants! There’s always room for another parviflora (or two) in my garden.

db, my local nurseries do not carry this type of plant material and my options are limited to mail-order or graft them myself. I’ll try to locate some scion wood for next winter since I’m finishing up with grafting for this year.

Alex I think that’s correct, you need them both! FYI Conifer Kingdom does list ‘Cleary’ for sale by mail order. It’s pricey but I have only ever seen this for sale once before – when I got mine. I think that mine came from Iseli but am not 100% certain (could have been Buchholz). I’m attaching the link to the CK listing – they have a lot of parvifloras. Pinus parvifloras at Conifer Kingdom And btw, have you ever seen ‘Watnong’? Its cones are as blue as ‘Cleary’s are pink!

And Alex if you don’t get a ‘Cleary’ or can’t find scion wood locally, remind me next winter and I’ll send you some.
