The Blues (20 Replies)

Sara – Jerry Morris is likely one of the best “broomers” the conifer world has ever known. Jerry also has a few accounts  for landscaping and landscape maintenance. One major account he has serviced for many years is the Coors Brewing Company in Golden Colorado. Jerry noticed  one of the trees they had planted in the landscape was especially blue so he collected some scion and grafted some trees. What to name this exceptionally blue Colorado blue spruce? Since he could not use the name Coors… he settled on ‘C Blue’. This account is straight from Jerry Morris and was good enough  to get me to purchase the tree but also to hand carry it on the plane back to NY

Tsuga mertensiana Bumps Blue – most (well not us educated ACS folks) would ever know it is Tsuga, one of those good trivial pursuit quiz plants.

Abies lasiocarpa var. Arizonica ‘Glauca Compacta’ is a classic blue. Here’s a small plant growing in my garden.

One of my favorite large blues is an oldie but a goodie – Picea pungens ‘Hoopsii’.

Today I saw a Picea pungens ‘Gails Skyline’ which had remarkable blue color, as it was growing in the shadows of some deciduous trees. A pic of the new growth is below. This tree is growing in Marcellus, NY.
