Pond and Bald Cypress – Split trunks – Possibly result of last winter? (0 Replies)

Posted September 17, 2014 at 5:33 pm

We have 5 Pond Cypress, 11 Bald Cypress and 2 Dawn Redwoods that have developed splits in their trunks. The bark is loose from 1/2 to 3/4 the way around the trunk. Most injuries are on the South and East facing sides. Could this be from last winter’s devastating snow and ice storms, freeze and thaw and sun scald? We are in the Shenandoah Valley of VA. Would appreciate some advice. Thank you!.
