Pinus mugo Twisty (4 Replies)

Posted November 22, 2016 at 10:02 am

I bought one of these little novelty trees simply because I had never seen anything like it. What I want to know is as it grows larger with the twisted trunk grow into each other? If so will it die? If I knew how to add a picture I would copy paste did not work.

Hi Louise, to add a picture, first have it readily available on your computer desktop or an open folder. Then click on the the picture icon above (to the right of the B, the I and the chain-link thingy). That will open a screen that will allow you to drag and drop a picture into your message.

This will be necessary because ‘Twisty’ is not a valid cultivar name within Pinus mugo. I suspect come grower did something and sold it to you. I can’t really tell what’s going on until I see what’s going on. Good luck!

This originated at Islei Nursery. Pinus mugo ‘Twisty’ that is a seedling that has been cultured with twists and turns for artistic appeal. It is a tough and durable garden element. The question remains, as the trunk grows in girth, with it compact onto itself? I bought one at Sky Nursery and another at West Seattle Nursery.

Well, isn’t that something? . . . It looks like they wired the trunk for a couple of years to look like that while the top growth is growing in typical (straight) fashion. As it ages, I would wager that the trunk will thicken, maintaining a “c” shape while the top will become a rather large tree, growing upright. Of course, all bets are off if you continue styling it in a Bonsai fashion.

Hi Louise and David,

Perhaps I can clear a misunderstanding here.

Iseli Nursery offers our independent garden center customers a product called Pinus mugo Twisty™. Twisty™ is not a cultivar name (note that the name is not contained within single quotes, such as ‘Slowmound’). Twisty™ is a brand name for our pre-bonsai line which currently includes seedling Pinus mugo plants that have been trained at the nursery to inspire the consumer to create their own bonsai.

Many traditional bonsai plants are conifer species and have been cultured to create and maintain their unique form and small stature. The seedlings available in our Twisty™ line have the potential, like any conifer species, to grow vigorously and will require effort on the part of the consumer to create and maintain their own bonsai.

I encourage you to look at photos of older bonsai plants and imagine how those plants, with their twisted and curved trunks and branches may have appeared 20, 30, 50 or 100 years ago. It is possible that some may have looked very much like the one in your picture. The plant will not harm itself as it grows, due to its curved trunk.

Have fun with your new conifer! May it provide you a lifetime of peace and tranquility.
