Looking for GOOD grafting classes in Northern IL (5 Replies)

Posted May 28, 2014 at 12:18 pm

I joined this ACS Society today in the hopes of learning & sharing more about conifers AND in the hopes of finding really top notch educational classes from knowledgable educators in the conifer trade on Grafting (and Propagating) for a beginner through expert in the Northern Midwest area (Near Chicago). Does anyone have any information or experience taking a really good class in my area on grafting conifers? I am willing to drive a bit of a distance, but the closer the better. I have a few other conifer loving friends that would be joining me possibly. I have been looking for years with no luck. Seems a shame this valuable education might be lost in our future.

Jami, hello and welcome to the ACS!
A desire to learn how to propagate your own trees is a symptom of the latter stages of Addicted Conifer Syndrome (ACS). Congratulations on coming so far so quickly. The first thing I would recommend you do is contact Bob Fincham at Coenosium Gardens (bobfincham@mashell.com). He created a really good CD covering all aspects of grafting conifers. I have gone through this gem of instruction several times and learned a lot from it. Here is a link to his website.
As you may know, grafting time is in the winter. There are a number of folks in the midwest who are experts in the field who will hopefully respond to this message and offer you an invitation. I’m pretty sure that Gary Gee in Stockbridge, MI offers classes every winter. I would definitely reach out to him. Along with Bob, Gary is one of the great minds of conifering. Here is a link to his website.
good luck!

Thank You David! I was hoping to get some help from the experts on a really good local EXPERT grafting class. You were pretty quick to respond as I just signed up today…SO COOL! I already sent an email to Bob Fincham (Your Link did not work, but I was able to google him.) to request his DVD on grafting if it is still available (Nothing on his web site about a grafting DVD for sale, so I am hoping he is still offering it.) and ironically I was up at Gee Farms two weeks ago (second trip in past 5 years) on a conifer Shopping trip with a friend. Didn’t know to even ask about a grafting class. We mainly were driving to Schmidt’s Nursery and Gardens in Jackson, MI. LOVE HIS NURSERY!! I hope others will help me out with a lead to a great Grafting Class in the midwest near Chicagoland. (NEED SOMETHING TO DO IN THIS AWFUL COLD MIDWEST WINTER!)

Jami – welcome to the club of cone heads. I too am looking for a good grafting class – but I’m in NC!! Please let me know what you find out from Bob F about DVD. I think there’s also some stuff on You-tube. Join Garden Web & search grafting under the conifers forum for some discussion there.

Thanks David Sara and Robin!
I was able to order the CD/DVD from BOB F along with his conifer book. Emailed him then just mailed him a check for $60.00 for both incl shipping.

I am very happy he took the time to make this DVD as he probably thought it was important knowledge to share and not available to CONEHEADS. HA! I love gardeners like that! I am very much like that too Share everything in my garden so Thanks “David” for the lead. It’s the Closest I have come to this knowledge on Grafting in past 10-15 years of looking. I even increased my search and I have spent hours looking for a class anywhere in the 5 surrounding states on grafting. I know a class is out there somewhere…Just like there are gardeners that LOVE To share. Did this search years ago too and NO luck. Seems very sad to me that this art might be lost in our future if this love of conifers is not passed on and we end up with big box store items only. Our kids stay inside all day with their noses in their electronics and it is so much harder to interest them in the beauty of our landscapes. I am very happy to hopefully at least get a dvd possibility. Maybe someone will read our request for a conifer grafting class and come to our rescue?? PLEASE??
