Is it too late to transplant Abies in Seattle in December? (2 Replies)

I need to move Abies magnifica ‘Mt. Si’. It is about twice the size of a basketball now and too close to another tree. I don’t want to kill either one.

I’d wait until February. Just be aware that you’re going to have to be on it like a hawk with the water all next year. In the northwest, October and February are the two sweet spots for transplanting. The trick is to time the move in accordance with root growth. If you dig in December, too many dormant, damaged root are just sitting in cold soil, waiting to wake up in March. Too great of a chance for them to rot.
