Can a Pinus strobus Angel Falls grow a new leader? (2 Replies)

Greetings from Ketchikan Alaska. Our Angel Falls lost its leader under a snow load last winter. Can I stake up a new branch in order to establish a new leader? I had tall visions for our otherwise specimen tree. What do you think?

Hello, Georg … Ketchikan is awesome. I’m envious that you get to live there.

It’s this tree’s nature to “knuckle over” from the top of its highest stake, so the answer is yes; you can certainly tie up a new branch to keep it growing upward. Best time to do so is in the spring before the new terminal candles start to harden off. Be gentle; you might not be able to get it to go straight up all at once.
