American Conifer Society on Plants Map (1 Replies)

Just a quick note to let you peek at the profile for the American Conifer Society on Plants Map.

Plants Map is a social site similar to Facebook, except it is exclusively for plant collectors and gardeners.

Non-profits such as ACS get a free profile (just like being listed on Facebook) but the coolest part is that when other ACS members start to put their gardens on Plants Map, the ACS can “favorite” those gardens and they will appear under the ACS profile. How cool is that?

It’s all free. The point of Plants Map from the beginning was to move the pen and paper records of people’s gardens to an online social site that provided utility to keep collections and plants and over time, make notes and share information about a plant as it grows.

We’ve started helping to add Jerry Kral’s beautiful garden and plants in Rochester, NY. Shortly you’ll be able to find those plants and pictures from the ASC profile page. Until then, keep an eye on:

We’d guess there are probably thousands of pictures still to add to that page and several hundred plants :)

Tracy Blevins and I started Plants Map for ourselves really. Our list of plants was becoming unwieldy and our photo albums were bulging at the seams. Tracy has been a Master Gardener in several states (urban forestry – NY, woody ornamentals – AL, Virginia natives -VA) over the years and I’ve recently caught the conifer bug. We thought we’d share what we do for a living (building apps and websites) and what we do for a hobby (plants, digging holes, hauling mulch and Googling for more plants) with everyone else and so we started a site.

Go have fun.

Bill, I want our ACS Members to understand that we cooperated with you and Tracy and — with Jerry’s permission — I uploaded images from Jerry’s garden as a courtesy to a fellow ACS member to help you get your business started since it is supportive of many of the same principles in the American Conifer Society mission statement.

However, it needs to be made clear that the ACS is not affiliated with, nor in partnership with, Plants Map. The content you have described here does not reside on the ACS servers nor is it covered by the ACS Privacy Policy or Terms of Use. Members who participate in Plants Map are entering into a separate relationship with Plants Map.

Good luck with your venture.
