Acer saccharum 'Monumentale' (1 Replies)

Posted August 12, 2018 at 5:19 pm

My ‘Monumentale’ has developed a second leader. Tree is about 6 ft. tall so far. I’d like to keep it narrow per the cultivar. Is it a good idea to lopper one of the leaders? In the Fall? Thank you.

Hi Denise … first let me tease you a bit by reminding you that ‘Monumentale’ is not a conifer LOL. Now on to the serious part: If the tree is developing a double leader, you may easy remove the one that offends you. Be aware that this is a normal growth habit for this plant, but the splits most often occur 20-30 feet up in the tree.
