Abies Veitchii Pygmy (5 Replies)

Posted May 9, 2017 at 11:30 am

I acquired this plant from Dennis Dodge in 2005. I cannot find this plant when I do any on-line searches. I know Dennis had German connections for some of this plant material. It looks a lot like the picture of “Heine” in the conifer data base. I was just wondering if anyone had come across this name before.

I just searched all of my usual resources and found absolutely nothing about this cultivar. Might a recommend taking a picture and posting it to Facebook’s “Planet Conifer.” That’s where many of the European experts discuss these obscure cultivars.

Thanks David. I will give that a try and let everyone know if I get a response. I also got a veitchii kohut from Dennis in 2006 that I cannot find anything on. I will put that one on Planet Conifer as well and see what I get.

That one’s much easier to figure out. Best guess is that it’s Abies veitchii ‘KO-2001 WB.’ This originated as a witch’s broom found by Jörg Kohout in (obviously) 2001.

Thanks David, With a name like “KO-2001 WB” I do not imagine it was a very big seller.

It’s certainly not known at all in the nursery trade. This one’s simply a collector plant.
