As noted elsewhere, nomenclature is a hotly debated topic in plant taxonomy, a science that, itself, is always in flux. More as a courtesy to professionals, the ConiferBase records contain a data field, called Status, that indicates the state of a plant’s provenance with a botanical registry.
The ACS Conifer Database lists a plant’s status as ‘Provisional’, ‘Valid’, ‘Established – Registration Unknown’, ‘Synonym’ and ‘RHS Accepted’. Many of the records in the database have been registered with the Royal Horticultural Society in the UK, a widely respected institution and one with which ACS works with to validate newly discovered conifer specimens. For more information on this program and instructions on how you might register a new conifer go to our Conifer Registration page.
